The Neogene, bounded by the earlier Paleogene and the modern Quaternary, saw the continued uplift and shaping of the modern Rocky Mountains. It's this relatively recent activity that has given the Rockies their rugged quality, since there has not been enough time for them to be eroded smooth like the Appalachian Valley and Ridge Province. Other features with Neogene-aged rocks include the Coastal Plain and the Fall Line, the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, Florida, and the Cascades. |
